Cold Laser therapy

Cold laser therapy is also called “low-level laser therapy” and has become a very popular treatment with athletes because it has been found to be useful in speeding the healing process with injuries. Here in our office, we utilize the FDA cleared device: MR4 by TerraQuant. This machine delivers a super pulsed laser that can vary the depth and is considered by some to be the world's most advanced pain relieving modality.

What is Cold Laser?

Cold Laser Therapy or Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) utilizes specific wavelengths of light used to penetrate between 2-5 centimeters below the skin to allow interaction with tissue resulting in promotion and acceleration of the healing process. The laser is a handheld device, often the size of a flash light, used by a clinician to treat the injured or painful area(s). The Cold Laser is placed directly over the injured area for anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes, depending on the size of the area.

The non-thermal photons emitted from the laser help eliminate pain, swelling, reduce muscle spasm, and increase functionality. This process can be compared to photosynthesis in plants – the absorption of light, converted to energy allowing the plant to grow.

What can Cold Laser help with?

According to the World Health Organization, this form of treatment has been found to be helpful with conditions like:

  • Sciatica
  • Shoulder joint injuries
  • Elbow joint injuries
  • Wrist injuries
  • Hip joint pain: arthritis, arthrosis
  • Knee joint injuries
  • Calcaneal Spur
  • Ankle joint pain: arthritis, arthrosis
  • Temporomandibular arthritis and arthrosis
  • Cervical spine: pain, sprain, strain
  • Lumbar Spine: pain, sprain, strain

Medical Research about Cold Laser

The effectiveness of cold laser therapy for neck pain was recently reviewed by The Bone and Joint Decade 2000-2010 Task Force on Neck Pain, an initiative conducted by a multidisciplinary team of researchers and clinicians.

The task force concluded that low-level laser therapy can be a beneficial treatment for certain types of neck pain, including types of pain that cause little or no interference with daily activities and pain the does limit daily activities, as compared to pain that includes radiculopathy (arm pain) or serious pathology.1

Additional Info about Cold Laser at the ICIM

Many people are often afraid to seek treatment when they are in pain and that is normal. Just know that Cold Laser Therapy is painless and will encourage your body to heal itself.  Also, since we have the LaserStim module of the TerraQuant system, we are able to apply electrical muscle stimulation to the area at the same time.  This means that the procedure can be billed to most insurance carriers.
